Get Better Control of Your Car

Your car can stop its movement in several different ways -- through disc brakes, drum brakes, and parking brakes, as well as anti-lock brakes, which are built for safety.

Disc brakes include a rotor, which is attached to the wheel, and a caliper, which holds the pads together. Hydraulic pressure causes the piston to clamp the break and cause friction in order to slow down or stop entirely.

Drum brakes are attached to the wheel, cylinder, brake shoes and brake return springs. Hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder causes the wheel cylinder to press the brake shoes against the brake drum. This will also stop your car.

The parking brake uses cables to mechanically apply the brakes when needed. If you're on an incline, this is incredibly important to utilize.

Anti-lock brakes are a recently developed safety feature to avoid collisions in cases of immediate stops. The ABS will lock-up your wheels rapdily through the on-board computer.
